MBTA Announces "Free Commuter Rail Fridays" for Summer 2026

MBTA (Massachusetts) commuter rail train 1060 during the day

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is rolling out a major incentive for summer travelers this year, announcing that all standard MBTA Commuter Rail service will be completely free of charge every Friday from June through August 2026.

The initiative, designed to encourage tourism and ease regional travel, covers all standard Commuter Rail routes into and out of Boston. Whether you are commuting to work or planning a weekend excursion to coastal beaches or historic inland towns, the fare-free Fridays apply to all standard rail lines throughout the three-month period.

Below is a list of North Shore Commuter Rail stations:

Mainline (North Station to Beverly)

  • North Station (Boston)
  • Chelsea
  • River Works (Restricted: for GE employees only)
  • Lynn
  • Swampscott
  • Salem
  • Beverly (Transfer point for both branches)

Newburyport Branch

Key Dates and Details

The free-ride policy is in effect for every Friday throughout the summer, including the following holiday-adjacent dates:

  • Juneteenth (Friday, June 19, 2026)

  • Friday, July 3, 2026 (observed Independence Day weekend)

The MBTA advises riders to note that while the majority of service is included, specific exclusions apply. Regular fares will continue to be charged for:

  • Boston Stadium Trains: Specifically those serving World Cup matches in Foxboro.

  • CapeFLYER Service: Regular seasonal pricing applies.

  • Special Event Trains: Additional services dedicated to Foxboro events.

Additional Summer Savings

Beyond the Free Friday promotion, the MBTA is launching several other programs to assist regular commuters and weekend travelers throughout the summer:

  • Discounted Monthly Passes: Commuters can purchase monthly passes at 50% off for the months of June, July, and August, resulting in total savings between $321 and $639, depending on the travel zone.

  • Expanded Weekend Access: Monthly passholders will enjoy expanded travel privileges, allowing them to ride through Zone 10 (or Interzone 10) on weekends, regardless of their pass’s specific zone designation.

  • $1 Summer Companion Fare: To encourage group travel, monthly passholders may bring one guest along on weekends for a flat fare of just $1.

Planning Your Trip

With special events, including World Cup matches, slated for the summer, riders are urged to plan ahead. Regular Commuter Rail service to Foxboro is suspended on match days, replaced exclusively by special event trains that are not covered under the free-fare promotion.

For the most up-to-date information, passengers should use the MBTA Go app or the official MBTA Trip Planner to verify schedules and service status before heading to the station.

By utilizing these summer promotions, the MBTA hopes to make exploring Massachusetts easier and more affordable for residents and visitors alike. For more information, visit the official MBTA website or check in-station signage.
