North Shore Set to Honor Juneteenth 2026: Complete Guide to Local Events and Festivals
Beverly has locked in
a great afternoon commemoration this year, and much like its neighbor Danvers,
the city is hosting its main community gathering on the Thursday afternoon
right before the holiday weekend begins.
Beverly Juneteenth
Celebration & Flag Raising
The event is organized
by Mayor Michael Cahill’s office in collaboration with the Beverly Human Rights
Committee to honor Black history, culture, and community joy.
- When: Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 5:15 PM
- Where: In front of Beverly City Hall (191 Cabot
St, Beverly)
- What to Expect: A formal community flag-raising
ceremony. The program is heavily focused on community voices and features
spoken word poetry, musical performances, reflections from local North
Shore youth, and remarks from local civic leaders.
Danvers
Danvers has locked in a great plan for its 6th
Annual Juneteenth Celebration, and it's happening right before the holiday
weekend kicks off.
Rather than waiting for the holiday Friday when
municipal sites close down, the town is hosting its community gathering on the
Thursday afternoon right before.
The event is a direct collaboration between the
Danvers Human Rights & Inclusion Committee and the North Shore Juneteenth
Association.
- When: Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 3:30 PM
- Where: In front of Danvers Town Hall (1 Sylvan St, Danvers)
- What to Expect: A community ceremony featuring local speakers, live
music, art, and creative social expressions.
- Special Highlight: The ceremony will feature a special guest spoken
word poetry performance by local artist Kaleo Jacobs, alongside the
traditional community readings and song.
Gloucester/Rockport
6th Annual Gloucester Juneteenth Celebration
This celebration is a collaborative effort
between the city and the Cape Ann Museum, originating from grassroots local
organizing a few years back.
- When: Friday, June 19, 2026, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
- Where: Gloucester City Hall (9 Dale Avenue, Gloucester)
- Cost: Free and open to the public.

Raising ceremony, featuring opening remarks from Mayor Greg Verga, city
officials, and Cape Ann Museum leadership.

Kyrouz Auditorium for a community reading of Frederick Douglass’s
landmark speech, "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?"
Following the collective reading, there will be a facilitated group

Ipswich
The Trustees: Juneteenth Choate Island Kayak
& Hike
The Trustees of Reservations are hosting a
highly unique, deeply meaningful commemorative paddle and hike through the
waters of the Crane Estate in Ipswich.
The event centers on a vital, newly illuminated
piece of local history: honoring the lives of Jane and Violet, two enslaved
teenage girls who lived and worked on the Choate Island Farm in the 1700s.
Thanks to recent research by local students and ancestral descendants, The
Trustees have installed a permanent historical marker on the island to ensure
their legacy is permanently honored and remembered.
- When: Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- Where: Launches into Essex Bay / Crane Estate waters (exact meetup
directions are emailed to registrants upon sign-up).
- What to Expect: Kayak guide interpreters lead a group paddle around
Choate, Round, and Long Islands. You will land on Choate Island for a
moderate hike to its highest point, explore the historic 1725 Choate
House, and visit Jane and Violet's burial site and the new historic
marker.
- The Gear: The Trustees provide the sit-on-top kayak, paddle, and life
jacket. Participants must be 15 or older and competent swimmers.
Lynn
If you are looking for a weekend gathering, the flagship regional celebration is heading to Lynn the day after the holiday.
- NSJA Annual Juneteenth Celebration
- When: Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
- Where: 111 North Common St, Lynn
- What: The North Shore Juneteenth Association's main community
gathering. It focuses heavily on centering Black American culture and the
African Diaspora through music, local food, storytelling, and
youth-friendly programming.

Marblehead
Marblehead is kicking things off early with an
afternoon gathering right by the harbor.

- Where: Abbot Hall Lawn (188 Washington St, Marblehead)
- What to Expect: A heavy focus on community performance and reflection.
It features live African dance and drumming performances, poetry readings,
a traditional flag-raising ceremony, and a youth-friendly scavenger hunt.

bites" catered by local favorite A Taste of Mae, along with
ice cream.
- Partners: Co-sponsored by the town, Marblehead Museum, Marblehead No

Newburyport
Newburyport: The Afternoon
The first half of the day focuses on family
fun, community visibility, and local performances.
- 12:00 PM: Free Community Swim
- Where: YWCA Greater Newburyport Pool (13 Market St)
- What: Open to the community and completely free—families are welcome
to stop by, cool off, and dive in to kick off the day.
- 2:00 PM: Juneteenth Flag Raising
- Where: In front of Newburyport City Hall (60 Pleasant St)
- What: The formal ceremony featuring remarks from Newburyport Mayor
Sean Reardon, local activists, and local poets.
- 2:30 PM: Community Celebration & Ice Cream
- Where: Directly following the flag raising at City Hall.
- What: The space transitions into a community block party. There will
be incredible live Double Dutch team performances, presentations from
local community organizations, and a free sundae bar sponsored by Biggart's
Ice Cream.
Revere/Chelsea
- Early Festival (Past): The City of Revere actually held its official
community Juneteenth Celebration a bit early this year, on Thursday, June
4, 2026, at Costa Park. It featured live music, food, dance, and cultural
displays.
- Holiday Closures: For the actual holiday on Friday, June 19, city
offices and the Revere Public Library will be closed to observe the day.
The Chelsea Black Community (CBC) group—which
was recently honored at the State House for their local impact—organizes the
city's flagship event every year.

- Where: Washington Park (Prattville neighborhood, Chelsea)
- What: A classic community gathering that brings together local

Salem
Salem has a packed
lineup this year, specially tying into the city's 400th-anniversary
commemorations.

- Where: Riley Plaza, Salem
- What: Hosted in collaboration with the NSJA. It
features remarks from NSJA President (and Lynn City Councilor) Nicole
McClain, local officials, and a performance of "Lift Every Voice and
Sing."
- Juneteenth Jam Festival III
- When: Friday, June 19, 2026, starting at 11:30
AM
- Where: Charlotte Forten Park (289 Derby St,
Salem)
- What: A full festival honoring the 200th
birthday of Salem-born abolitionist and trailblazer Sarah Parker Remond.
- The Details: Includes a public reading of
Frederick Douglass’s famous speech led by Michael Corley, a free 1-hour
Black history walking tour by Salem Historical Tours (caps at 40 people,
sign-ups at 1:00 PM), contemporary ballet by Jo-Mo-Mé Dance Arts, and
live music from Coco Brown & The Invitation at 2:30 PM.
- Perks: A pop-up market showcasing local Black-owned businesses, free food from Butter Ur Biscuit, and red velvet ice cream from Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe
If you are looking for an active, highly unique
way to participate close to Saugus, there is an incredible community ride
happening just ahead of the holiday weekend.
- The Juneteenth Ride to Lynn Museum & Arts Center
- When: Saturday, June 13, 2026 (Saugus pickup at 10:35 AM)
- The Meeting Point: Anna Parker Playground (Saugus)
- What it is: Organizers from Bike to the Sea are leading a group
ride down the Northern Strand Trail. Riders starting in Malden and Revere
will roll right through Saugus to pick up local cyclists before heading
into Lynn.
- The Destination: The ride culminates at the Lynn Museum & Arts
Center around 11:00 AM for free admission to the moving Vessels of
Slavery: Forget Me Not exhibit, featuring an interactive quilting
workshop with the artists, followed by a community picnic lunch on the
Lynn Common.
Swampscott
Swampscott "Let Freedom Ring!"
Celebration
Swampscott is hosting its celebration the
afternoon before the holiday weekend begins.
- When: Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- Where: Swampscott Town Hall Lawn (22 Monument Ave, Swampscott)
- What to Expect: A lively, outdoor lawn festival put together by
Swampscott Recreation, METCO, and S.U.R.E. Diversity.
- The Details: The afternoon includes a flag-raising ceremony, live
music, local poetry readings, inspiring guest speakers, and a dedicated
pop-up market featuring local vendors. There will also be plenty of food
available on-site.

Winthrop Juneteenth Flag-Raising
Ceremony
- Where: The E.B. Newton Cultural Center / Old School
(131 Pauline St, Winthrop)
- What to Expect: A morning gathering featuring local
town councilors, community leaders, and state officials (such as State
Senator Lydia Edwards, who frequently joins). The ceremony features brief
remarks on the history of the day, a community song, and the raising of
the official Juneteenth flag over the cultural center to stand as a symbol
of unity and remembrance.
